So, Bronwyn and I facilitated a group of teachers who worked for hours writing learning targets. It was a dedicated group of teachers and super inspirational to see their work and listen to their conversations. They talked about everything from specific assessment questions, to choosing the perfect verb for the learning target. They struggled with the idea of long term targets and supporting targets and exactly how would this look in a grade book? Then the conversation got interesting. So here's the question for all of you:
What is required in a gradebook to support this idea of "grading for learning"?

Figuring out what you want to keep track of is key to designing an appropriate grade book.
ReplyDeleteI would want to report the level of mastery on the long term targets. To me, the long term targets seem to be where we measure higher level thinking and problem solving. However, I would also like to report the supporting targets, because this level of detail helps students, parents and me know exactly what an individual needs to work on in order to be more successful. The detail is what makes the system so powerful.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure what this would look like in a gradebook. Maybe the long term targets would be on the "front" page, but you could click on them to see a list of supporting targets for that long term target.
A few things I know I would like, regardless of long term and supporting targets are to be able to create units within my categories. I would then be able to sort by category or by unit. There is probably some trick for doing so in Discovery. If you are doing this, please share.
I would also like to be able to share learning targets in a building or even the district so we wouldn't all have to enter all of them.
I'd like to be able to tab across the page indefinitely (not limited by the assignments per page). And when I click "back" from entering a new assignment, I'd like to go back to where I was, not back to page one of the gradebook.
Anyone else want to share their discovery dreams?
